Onward Launches Pilot NRV Talent Tours Program in Pulaski County

Fifteen students from Pulaski County High School recently participated in the pilot of the NRV Talent Tours program, visiting two key employers in Pulaski CountyPatton Logistics and Red Sun Farms. Students in grades 9th through 12th were given an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the operations of these businesses, learning about career opportunities available in the warehousing/distribution and food processing/agribusiness industries. These in-depth industry tours offered students a unique chance to connect classroom learning with real-world job skills while gaining early exposure to career pathways available in their own community.

“Onward NRV partnered with Patton Logistics and Red Sun Farms to create an amazing work-based learning trip for students at Pulaski County High School,” said Chris Sklar of Jobs for Virginia Graduates Specialist. “Students were able to see many different roles at the facilities, and the tours were very informational with many questions being asked. I was very happy and excited to be part of the pilot program, and Max Davenport of Onward NRV knocked it out of the park for us. I certainly look forward to working again with Onward NRV during next school year!”

NRV Talent Tours was created to provide early career exploration opportunities for high school students by partnering with regional businesses in targeted industries such as Advanced Manufacturing, Information Technology, Uncrewed Systems, and Food Processing & Agribusiness. The program is designed to help students discover their interests and strengths, better understand the skills and education needed for various career paths, and explore full-time employment options in Virginia’s New River Valley. By engaging with industry professionals and observing real-world applications of technical knowledge, students gain valuable insight into potential future careers.

This successful pilot, facilitated by Onward New River Valley in collaboration with Pulaski County High School and Pulaski County, is the first step in a broader regional effort. The goal is to replicate the program across other localities in Virginia’s New River Valley, creating a consistent and impactful career exploration experience for students throughout the region. By connecting students to local industries through high-quality work-based learning, NRV Talent Tours aims to build a strong, homegrown talent pipeline and support long-term workforce development across the NRV.
